I just came across a great quotation in the May edition of Real Simple magazine. It sums up some of the thoughts I’ve been having as I spring clean my home. It is:
“Creation is a better means of self-expression than possession; it is through creating, not possessing, that life is revealed; ” Vida Dutton Scudder, The Privilege of Age.
As I deeply clean and purge the house, it is amazing that we hold onto so many things. Certainly, we feather our nest with things that hold significance, mementos of special times, and achievements, but what about the rest? We become slaves to giant houses, fancy cars, the latest widget – what others have dictated we “should” have and want. We see possessions as our self-expression, signals and signs that we “have arrived.” Where is this destination? I have no idea. While what we collect is amazing, it is more amazing, and liberating, to let it go.
